51	Obituary: MRS. HARDMAN CAME HERE IN 1870 - IS DEAD Mrs. Emma Z. Hardman, of East Main St., died at noon today after a lingering illness of several months, at the age of 72 years. Mrs. Hardman was born in West Virginia, and came to Parsons in 1870, and was united in marriage to J. M. Hardman at Parsons in 1879. In the death of Mrs. Hardman, Parsons as well as southeastern Kansas loses another of the early day settlers, as they came to this part of the state when Parsons was in its infancy and endured the hardships and privations which was the lot of all early settlers in southeastern Kansas in the early days. Mrs. Hardman is survived by one daughter and one son. Mrs. A. C. Simmons, wife of the well-known dentist of Parsons; and Ray R. Hardman who succeeded his father in the rock crushing business, and two grandchildren, Stewart and Balsora Simmons; also five sisters and two brothers: Mrs. Susan Onaker, Mrs. Etta Beck, Mrs. Kate Vandegriff, Mrs.Addie Reasoner, all of Parsons; and Mrs. Belle Hardman of Spencer, W. Va.; John E. Burditt, Bell Tower, Montana, and William Burditt, Spokane, Washington. She was a life long member of the Baptist Church of this city and one of the most earnest and ardent workers, and her church to her was first of all. She was also a member of the Fraternal Aid Union, and the Rebekah Lodge of Parsons. The funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:30 at the old home on East Main Street, with Dr. W. H. 52	Obituary: Mrs. Lenna Chapman McVay, 54, of Gandeeville, a former employee of the TIMES-RECORD, died at her home at 5 P.M. last Friday. She had been ill for the past four months. She was a graduate of the Mountain State Business College, Parkersburg, and was formerly employed by the Cabot and Spencer Gas Companies. She was born in Roane County the daughter of Benjamin Franklin and Mina (Board) Chapman, and was a member of the St. John's Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband James M. McVay of Gandeeville, one step-daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Peterson of Weston; and one step-son, Karl McVay of Clarkson, KY; and two step-grandchildren. Services were held at 10:30 A.M. Monday at the Hardman-Conrad Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. B. W. Leggett officiating. 54	Obituary: Mrs. Nancy Ann Short, 78, died yesterday at the home of a son, Lawrence Short of Newton. She will be buried today in the Caldwell cemetry at Left Hand after services at 2 P.M. in the Rogers Fork Baptist Church, Rev. Edward Hunt Officiating. Also surviving are two other sons, Wayne of Charleston and Aaron of Ovapa, and five daughters, Mrs. Martha Igo of Ovapa, Mrs Flora Flynn of Illinois, Mrs. Gay May of Newton, Mrs. Mary Varner of Bristol, and Mrs. Doris Ross of Clarksburg, and 22 grandchildren. 55	Obituary: Mrs. Nora Olive Sleeth, 69, died Feb. 25th at her home at Clifton, Mason County. Remains were brought to the Mt. Zion Church near her old home in Curtis District where funeral services were conducted by Rev. Howard West. Vandale Undertakers were in charge of the burial. She was born July 19, 1869 at Reedyville, a daughter of James and Rebecca (Wetzel) Riddle. She was married to Henry Thomas Sleeth Dec. 22, 1889. Survivors are five sons and five daughters; a brother and a sister; and a half-sister. 56	Obituary: Mrs. Roxie M. Straight, 71, of 1255 Leeser av., died today after an illness of about three years. She was a native of [Wirt] County, West Virginia. She came to Akron from Reedy, W.Va., about 30 years ago. Mrs. Straight leaves her husband, Clarence, a son, James O. of Cuyahoga Falls; her step-mother, Mrs. Lela Hartshorn of Cuyahoga Falls; three sisters, Gertrude Hartshorn of Akron, Mrs. Carl H. 59	Obituary: NORTON -- Rector R. Carper, 87, passed away May 5, 1998. Rector was born in Little Lefthand, W. Va., on June 8, 1910. He worked for B. F. Goodrich in their mold department for 27 years. 62	Obituary: Opal Tawney LEFT HAND - Opal Tawney, 90, of Left Hand died Aug. 12, 2001, in Roane General Hospital, Spencer, after a short illness. She was a homemaker and a member of Linden Chapter 152 Order of the Eastern Star, Linden, the House of Prayer, Left Hand, and the Tri-County Senior Citizens, Newton. She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, two granddaughters and one sister. Survivors include: her husband, Clement L. She was born in Reedy, a daughter of George Nelson and Emily Susan (Ingram) Longsworth. She was employed as a nurse's aide/central supply at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital. 65	Obituary: Preston S. "Bud" Harless The funeral of Preston S. Harless, who died at his home in Morgantown, was conducted from the home May 12. Rev. J. J. Loudin was in charge. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mr. Harless was born 9 June 1860 near Spencer, WV, but had lived here for several years. He was married 17 Oct 1886 to Miss Clarissa Jane Sleeth and to this union were born 9 sons, eight of whom survive. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and was well-known in his community. Survivors are the widow and eight sons: Orville F., Clayton, and Preston S. Jr. of Akron, OH; Addison S. and J. Dennis of Morgantown; Howard H., Russell M. and Harry F. of Huntington. Two sisters also survive: Mrs. C. A. Ingram and Mrs. S. F. Nutter. 66	Obituary: Roane Woman Dies In Car's 100-Ft. Plunge A 65-year old Roane County woman was killed and her husband injured Saturday at about 6:30 p.m. when their Jeep plunged over an embankment on U.S. 119 nine miles north of Clendenin. Mrs. Ella Robinson of Walton died instantly of internal chest and head injuries. Her husband, William, 63-year old retired South Penn Oil Co. employee, was taken to Charleston General Hospital with five fractured ribs and lacerations on the head. His condition was listed as good. The wreck happened at the foot of Left Hand Hill. Robinson told Hess and Harper Funeral Home ambulance attendants that he and his wife were returning from a fox chase when they wrecked. He said he was rounding a curve and lights from an oncoming car blinded him. Robinson said his Jeep ran off the road and over an embankment. Witnesses at the accident scene estimated that the vehicle rolled about 100 feet down the steep hillside. Surviving Mrs. Robinson, in addition to her husband, are two daughters, Mrs. Murl Hays and Mrs. Marie Cummings of Walton; seven sons, Earl and Denzil of Walton; James of Akron, Ohio, CPO Olis Robinson, with the Navy in Rhode Island; Edward and William of South Charleston, and Sidney of Charlton Heights; her mother, Mrs. Lion Nida of Charleston; two brothers, Shirley Nida of Walton and Shirkey of Charleston, and three sisters, Mrs. Mae Francisco of Marlington, Mrs. Sally Gandee of Akron and Mrs. Peal Bradley of Philo, Ohio. 67	Obituary: ROBERT LOWRY PASSED AWAY AT HOME OF HIS SON IN RICHWOOD TUESDAY Mr. T. E. Vineyard received a telegram Tuesday announcing the death of Robert Lowry, which occured at the home of his son, W. H. Lowry, in Richwood, Tuesday, January 4th, 1916, following a long illness of heart trouble. Mr. Lowry spent most of his life in Roane County, near Linden, and was well known here. He went to Richwood several years ago to make his home with his son, who is a prosperous timber contractor. The body will arrive in Spencer to-day and will be taken out to Linden for interment to-morrow. Source: Times-Record Newspaper, Spencer, WV, January 6, 1916, pg 1 col 3 ROBERT WILLIAM LOWRY The body of Robert William Lowry, announcement of whose death appeared in the Times-Record last week, arrived in Spencer last Thursday morning and was taken out to Linden the same day and laid to rest in the old Lowry burying ground on Friday. The burial was in charge of the Linden Lodge A.F. & A.M., of which the deceased had been a member for many years. Rev. A. H. Bailey conducted the funeral services. A large gathering of former neighbors was present to witness the last sad rites over the remains of one whom they had known and respected. Mr. Lowry was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Harrison Lowry and was born in Monroe County, then Virginia, in 1844. The elder Lowry died when Robert was but a small boy; the mother again married to William Ferrell and moved to Linden in this county about 1850. The deceased is survived by a half-brother, James Ferrell, of Linden, and a half-sister, Mrs. P. A. Tallman, of Tariff. At the outbreak of the Civil War, young Lowry enlisted on the side of the Confederacy and served through to the end of that sanguinary conflict. Although he was in the thickest of the fight at Cloyd's Mountain, Malvern Hill and Gettysburg, yet he was never wounded and returned to Roane County to make his home. Shortly after the close of the war, Mr. Lowry was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Chapman, also of Linden. Mrs. Lowry passed away in 1884 and he was never married again. Surviving their union are the following children: M. H. Lowry, of Linden; W. H. Lowry, L. L. Lowry and Del Lowry, of Richwood; Van Lowry, E. G. Lowry, Robert Lowry and Wade Lowry, of Washington State; and Mrs. Flora Surface, of Newton, W.Va. The deceased went to Richwood about 1900 to engage in the timber business with his sons and was a resident of that city thereafter until death. "Bob" Lowry, as he was known to hundreds of friends in the county, was a likeable, genial fellow and many a heart is sad because he has passed over the Silent River. 68	Obituary: Rome M. Metz, 70, resident of Beverly [Ohio] for many years, died Saturday at 3:15 p.m. in Marietta Memorial Hospital. Born May, 5, 1880, in Roane Co., W.Va., he was a son of the late Silas and Elizabeth Burdine Metz. Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Eva L. Metz, four sons and three daughters; Wilbur L. Metz of Grand Rapids, Mich; Herman D. Met[z] of Lansing, Mich.; Ira A. Metz of L'Anse, Mich.; Burl P. Metz of Beverly; Mrs. Ralph Hanlon of Lowell; Mrs. Asher Okey of Coal Run and Mrs. Cecil Brooks of Lowell. Two brothers and one sister also survive, Charles Metz and Frank Metz, both of Lansing, Mich.; and Mrs. Elwood Dalton also of Lansing. 69	Obituary: She's Gone Died, at her residence, Tariff, Roane Co. W. Va., March 2nd, 1895 - Lucinda Reynolds, aged 58 years 2 months and 26 days. She was the wife of John A Reynolds, deceased, once a resident of Craig Co. She leaves 8 children to mourn her loss. Mother Reynolds was born in Craig Co. Dec. 4th, 1834. She was a tender wife, a kind mother, and a good Christian. She professed religion at an early age, and joined the Christian Baptist church, of which she lived a consistent member till death. All who knew her loved her. None will refuse to drop a tear to her memory. None will but breathe a sigh of regret that so good a woman has been taken from our midst. Her bereaved children have the sympathies of all who knew their dear mother. May she rest in peace. Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep, From which none ever wake to weep. She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and a graduate of Garfield High School. She was employed by Hills Department Store. Shelly was preceded in death by father, Billy Ray Carper; and father-in-law, Anthony Kinsinger. 73	Obituary: STEPS IN FRONT OF CAR; KILLED Madison Robinson, of Clendenin, Fatally Injured When Struck by Machine Driven by W. H. Engle, Former President of County Court -- Accident Occurred Saturday Morning on Spencer-Clendenin Road. Madison Robinson, 23, of Clendenin, was fatally injured Saturday morning when he was struck by an automobile driven by W. H. Engle, prominent farmer of Amma, and a former president of the Roane county court. The accident occurred in front of Mr. Robinson's store about a mile north of Clendenin on the Spencer-Clendenin paved road. Mr. Robinson had been riding to his store from home with a friend Austin Droddy, and arriving at his destination got out of the machine on the dirt side of the road. Walking around the back of the car to cross the pavement he failed to note the approach of Mr. Engle's machine from the opposite direction, stepping in front of it. The injured man was rushed at once to a Charleston hospital where it was found his skull was fractured his injuries being of such a serious nature that he died shortly after arriving there. Mr. Robinson had only recently purchased his store , prior to that time having been employed in the oil fields. Vineyard Funeral Service Held On Wed. ____ PROMINENT BUSINESS MAN & BANKER SUCCOMBS HERE ON MONDAY NIGHT ____ Was 57 Years of Age - Started in Business in Geary District - Connected With Banking Funeral services for T. E. Vineyard, aged 57 years, whose death occured here Monday evening at 6:15 p.m., were held from the residence on Main street Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. with a large congregation of sorrowing friends and relatives in attendance. The Rev. J. Albert Wells of Elkins, former pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church here, of which Mr. Vineyard was a life-long member, officiated and was assisted by the Rev. H. B. Workman, present pastor of the church. Mr. Vineyard, who was prominent in the banking and business development of Spencer, had been ill for several years. A paralytic stroke Monday, Sept. 24, was the cause of his death, as he did not rally from this attack. Prominent in Democratic politics. Mr. Vineyard has served as treasurer of the county committee and on the district board of education. He began his business career in Geary district, where he was raised and later moved to Spencer, where he started a shoe store. From this humble beginning, his activities branched out until he was one of the county's most influential business men. He is survived by his widow, one son, W. R. Vineyard; one daughter, Julia Ann Vineyard; and his father, Presley Vineyard. 75	Obituary: The death angel visited Spencer Sunday morning and took from the community one it its most respected and beloved citizens in the person of Nathan Curtis. Mr. Curtis had been in ill health for several months and while this was generally known, it was not realized his condition was so serious, the news of his death coming as a shock to the entire community. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the home on Chapman Avenue, in the presence of a large gathering of sorrowing friends and realtives, after which the remains were laid to rest in the mausoleum. Mr. Curtis, son of W. W. and Rebecca Wetzel Curtis, was born near Reedyville June 7, 1858, being nearly 70 years of age at the time of his death. On November 14, 1878, he was married to Samantha E. Lucas to which union one son, L. Ord Curtis, was born. Mrs. Curtis died 16 May 1885 and on February 14, 1905, Mr. Curtis married Mina M. Chapman, who together with a step-daughter, Lenna Chapman and his son, L. Ord Curtis, survive. Mr. Curis spent all of his life in Roane County, the last twenty-four years of it employed at the Spencer State Hospital until the condition of his health made it necessary to give up active work. Besides the above named relatives, there survive him one brother, Rev. A. J. L. Curtis of Barrickville; a sister, Mrs. Rulina Hardman of Akron, OH; two half-sisters, Mrs. Nora O. Sleeth of Clifton and Mrs. Sophronia R. Wilt of Cowen; one half-brother, P.H.S. Riddle of Clarence. Those of his brothers and sisters who have passed on are Mrs. Martha Starcher, Francis Marion Curtis, Rev. Albert L. Curtis and William S. Curtis. 76	Obituary: Thomas Luther Ingraham, a ten-year-old son of W. J. Ingraham, living three miles northeast of town, while kindling a fire with coal oil, on Monday evening, was burned so badly as to cause his death yesterday morning at 4 o'clock. The can exploded and the boy was a sheet of flames from head to foot. The remains were placed in Oakwood Cemetery yesterday afternoon. 77	Obituary: W. J. Ingraham, aged 74 years, died at his home in Kansas City at 12 o'clock yesterday. The remains will arrive from Kansas City tomorrow and short funeral services will be held from the home of J. M. Hardman, East Main St., at 3:30 Wednesday afternoon conducted by Rev. Grant Chambers of the First Baptist Church and interment in Oakwood Cemetery. Mr. Ingraham was a former resident of Parsons, but has been living in Kansas City for many years. 78	Obituary: William Sherman Curtis William S. Curtis answered the last roll call at his home in Parkersburg last Friday, November 26, 1915, at the age of 51 years. He was afflicted with tuberculosis and had been in declining health for many months before the end came. Mr. Curtis was born in Roane County June 30, 1864 and moved to Parkersburg twenty-seven years ago. The deceased was the son of Capt. William and Rebecca Curtis, both of whom have passed to the other shore. Capt. Curtis was killed in the battle of New Creek Station, W.Va., now Keyser, when William, his youngest child, was but one month old. The son never saw his father. He is survived by Nathan Curtis of Spencer, A.J.L. Curtis of Barricksville, brothers, and one sister, Mrs. Rulina Hardman of this city. His mother married again and P.H.S. Riddle of Curtis District a half-brother and Mrs. Thomas Sleeth of Looneyville, and Mrs. Sophronia Wilt of Webster County, half-sisters, survive. The deceased was united in marriage while yet a resident of this county to a Miss (Hannah) Nofsinger. She passed away several years ago. The following children survive this union; Logan, Ellsworth, and Mervin, sons, and Mrs. H.D. Stewart and Miss Belva Curtis, daughters all of this city. He was again married to Miss Florence Starcher, a Roane County girl of Zona, who died about two years ago. No children survive the last marriage. Mr. Curtis was a hardworking, but upright and fearless man. He maintained a reputation for sobriety and honesty and was a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was laid to rest in the Dils Cemetery on Sunday. Funeral services were held at the U. B. Church by Rev. Fred Slaughter. 79	Obituary: Yula Ombra Ingram, 88, of Parkersburg, died Friday, March 20, 1992, at the Willows Nursing Home. She was born in Calhoun County, a daughter of the late Samuel Jackson Smith and Anna Estella Ruley Smith. She attended the Church of Christ and was a life-long homemaker. She is survived by three sons: Victor E. Ingram of Spencer; Walter A. Ingram, Jr. and Glen I. Ingram of Parkersburg; two daughters: Beulah M. Spence of Vienna and Geneva G. MacIver of Parkersburg; 23 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Allen Ingram Sr., one daughter, Elsie; two sons, Bruce and Paul; three grandchildren; one brother, Berkeley Smith; and one sister, Verona Longsworth. 80	Obituary: Zell Hardman, 89, a retired farmer formerly residing in Roane Co., died in St. Joseph's Hospital yesterday morning following a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Cindy Jones Hardman, Rte. 5; five sons: Harold E. and George H. of Parkersburg, William F., Youngstown, OH, Richard, Olathe, KS, and Sherman of Jewett, OH; five daughters: Mrs. Jane Ruley, Mrs. Marie Long, Mrs. Madge Taylor, Mrs. Louise Taylor and Mrs. Pearl Stanley; a foster son, Donald Jones of Walton: three half-brothers, Jesse of Parkersburg, Clay of Williamstown and Bailey of East Liverpool, OH; twenty-nine grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 P.M. Monday from the Walton Union Church by the Rev. Orland Reynolds. Burial will be in the Looney Cemetery at Walton. The body will remain at the Vandale Funeral Home in Spencer until one hour before the services when it will be taken to the church.
